The Letter
Race Report ….sort of anyway….
OK, it’s not a race report, but to me it’s just as big. I woke up this morning, drank my coffee and ate a banana as usual. Then I got changed and headed out for a ride. When I got home I cleaned up and sat down to eat my breakfast in front of my PC as usual. I checked my email as usual. Then I saw something I have been waiting for, but not expecting in my in-box. I had been opening the mailbox out front every day with baited breadth, for some reason I was not expecting an email. It was titled “2004 World Solo Championships.” I am sure I smiled as I read it. I hesitated a bit before opening it. I knew what it was, but not exactly what it would say. I am sure I was still smiling when I opened it…..
Hi Ed,
Great job on qualifying for the 24 Hours of Adrenalin 2004 World Solo Championships being held this September in Whistler, British Columbia! Attached is your official letter of qualification and instructions for registering. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to register, thanks!
Sincerely,

24 Hours of Adrenalin
So what does it say…..what…….does……it……say……
I don’t have Microsoft Word or any other word processor application at home. I had to forward it to work so I could open the attachments. Did I qualify to race my age group or as an Elite? It was killing me to know. I have been waiting for over a month to know and the answer is finally here and now I have to wait even longer. aaaarrrrrrggggggg. I finished my breakfast, poured a cup of joe to go and headed to work.
The drive to work was a long one. Not in minutes, but in anticipation.
…..what…….does……it……say……
I get to work and realized I forgot my wallet. No lunch today. Who cares, I need to get to my desk ASAP. Across the parking garage, down the stairs, through the revolving lobby door. I nod to the security guard. “Morning”, we say. It’s really just after noon, but I don’t have time for such formalities. …must get to desk…. I make it to the elevator without further interruptions.
It’s a short trip to the second floor. I nod and smile the coworkers I pass, but avoid all conversation. Straight to the desk. I pull out the laptop, hook up the power and network cable. Does it always take this long to boot up? Can you hear my fingers tapping? I fire up my second PC with the network monitoring application on it. I see our site in Jacksonville, FL has been down for 20 minutes. I bet no one has called MCI yet. It can wait. Boot up already……
OK, it’s up. Do any of you work with Lotus Notes? It takes for ever to start up. Man alive, I am ready to crawl into my machine and make it work. Finally. There it is, the email. There are others, but again they can wait. It’s just typical work stuff. I open the email, double click the attachments and voila, there it is.
Dear Ed,
Congratulations on a great solo effort in 2004!
Hey, thanks. I’m very pleased with it myself.
With a solid field of solo participants and a strong contingency of teams and spectators, the BURN 24 Hour Challenge located in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, was certainly a great success!
Agreed.
We at twenty4 sports trust that upon receiving this letter you will be feeling strong again, as there is no doubt that a great deal of will power and energy was spent competing at this high level.
Yup, feeling good. Get to the goods….
Ed, it is our pleasure to offer you a guaranteed entry in the Elite category in the 2004 World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin(tm) Championships this coming September 4/5, 2004, based on your ranking in Wilkesboro,
North Carolina. World-renowned Whistler Resort in beautiful British Columbia, Canada will play host to the 2004 event.
Wooohooooo! At this point I pulled my shirt over my head soccer style and ran around the office…. on 3 different floors!
So, I am excited to announce I have received my qualification to race in the Elite category of the World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin(tm) Championships. There will indeed be some celebrating tonight.
Thanks for you all the great responses to my last race report. It’s good to know some of you are reading these. Take care and see you Canada.
