Camping at Mauch Chunk & Hangin’ in CT
Camping at Mauch Chunk & Hangin’ in CT
Sept 5th – 9th
Namrita and I wrapped up the Shenandoah 100 ride and headed north to Jim Thorpe, PA. The plan was to find a quiet camping spot with a lake near by and relax for a few days. After a few stops in the town of Jim Thorpe we headed for Mauch Chunk Park about 5 miles away. We took a quick look around and then decided it had everything we were looking for plus some trails nearby too.

We set up camp and spent the next 2 days staring at this view..

The view during breakfast…

The riding around the area is pretty good. The trails are hard to navigate due to all the intersecting ATV trails, but if you can keep a sense of direction you’ll be OK and the fact that the ridges are all perpendicular to each other helps too. We did two rides and both included some very rocky sections and gradual climbs.

The trail book we used. It was very detailed, but without trail signs it’s tough to follow.
From there we headed to Southeastern CT where I was born and grew up.
The large building in the lower center is where I was born…

We spent some time with my friends Mike & Beth Timmerman and my brother, Shaun, and his family, Eliane, Casey, Kate & Ali. It was cool to be back “home”, to see friends & family and show Nam all my old haunts. We stopped by the only bike shop I know in the area, Rose City Cycles, to have a few parts replaced on both our bikes. I always run into someone from my school days in odd places when I go back to CT and this time it was at this shop. Mickey, the one man show at RCC, and I went to elementary school together in Ledyard…we actually lived about 300 yards from each other. Many thanks to Mickey and Rose City Cycles for the work, everything worked perfectly.

I started riding after I left CT, but someday I’ll go back to do some….both the mtb and road stuff should be pretty sweet.
…off to the Churn & Burn 24!
