Building the Kona Unit 2-9

I am not a mechanic. My motto has always been “Ride them hard, ride them often, and let someone else fix’em.” Well, that’s about to change. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to improve my mechanical skills and this task is to begin with building my new Kona Unit 2-9 from scratch myself….well with a little supervision so no one gets hurt. I will building mine while my friend Clifford builds Namrita’s.

Here are some of the highlights of the build spec:
2006 19″ Kona Unit 2-9
Kona Unit 2-9

American Classic 350 MTB 29″ SS wheels with Sapim CX Ray Spokes
Amercian Classic MTN 350 29ers

Maxxis 29″ Ignitors
Maxxis Ignitor 29

American Classic MTB Ti Seatpost

…as well as:
Rock Shox Reba Race 29″
Jones H-Bar
Truvativ Stylo Cranks
Avid Juicy 7 brakes

So far I have the headset pressed in, mounted the fork, the stem & H-Bars are on, the cranks & pedals are installed, & the rotors are mounted to the wheels. I ran into a couple small issue so far. No rim tape, so the tires couldn’t be mounted. The hydralic brake hoses were too short for the wide H-bars and long 29″ wheel base & fork. I hope to have all these pieces in my hands by Friday so we can wrap this up and go for a ride.

Stay tuned for more pics.

Here is Namrita’s write up as well.

NICE. Just finished my first bike build in a long long time. Let me know how to get you the $$$ for the Got Banned shirt. I hear you have an XL. Might be more secure to use a PM or email on mtbr.com.

I just built up my old fisher commuter after some sweet satin black paint and it definitely just takes practice. Trimming up cables, balancing V-brake return, forgetting to tighten down the cranks (boy was that a suprise)…
